Our Practice · Established 1972

A small house,built slowly,in editions.

NORÉN is a Scandinavian-modern furniture house with a single atelier near Copenhagen. We make solid-wood pieces in editions of twenty-four or fewer, never in series.

Inside the NORÉN atelier

Chapter 01 · The Atelier

Where the work happens.

Our atelier sits above a print shop on Vesterbrogade, in a building from 1898. Six people work there full-time: two designers, two cabinetmakers, one weaver, one finisher.

Everything that leaves the atelier has passed through at least four pairs of hands and three prototypes. A piece we cannot finish to our standard does not ship.

Chapter 02 · Materials

Four materials,
the same way every time.

We use four primary materials. Each is sourced from a single supplier we have worked with for at least a decade.

Material · 01

Solid white oak

From FSC-certified forests in Småland, Sweden. Air-dried for fourteen months, then kiln-dried for six.

Material · 02

Italian bouclé

A heavy, off-white wool blend spun outside Biella. We sample three weights before specifying one for production.

Material · 03

Hand-woven paper cord

From a single Danish weaver in Jutland. Six hours and thirty metres of cord to seat one Halsa chair.

Material · 04

Beeswax & raw linseed oil

Our finishes are mixed in the atelier from beeswax from a Jutland apiary and cold-pressed linseed oil. No polyurethane. No shortcuts.

Chapter 03 · Designers

Four hands
behind the work.

NORÉN designs are signed, not branded. The person who drew a piece is the person whose name appears with it.

Founder · Lead designer

Maria Norén

Maria trained as a cabinetmaker in Jönköping before founding the atelier in 1972. She draws every Aalto piece by hand.

Designer · Wood

Erik Lind

Erik joined the atelier in 1998. He leads the Halsa family and our relationship with FSC-certified forests in Northern Europe.

Designer · Soft goods

Anu Berg

Anu designs the upholstered pieces. Her background is in textile conservation; she hand-specifies every fabric we use.

Designer · Lighting

Studio Vinge

A two-person studio in Gothenburg working in brass and stone. They have shaped every lamp we have ever made.
